DeKalb 3A Sectional Preview

Some of the top teams in the entire state are set to face each other in the uber-talented 3A field at DeKalb.

Fast Facts

Four of last year’s final-round 3A teams will compete in the 3A DeKalb Sectional.

The field is dominated by lyrical and jazz teams, with a dash of hip hop mixed in.

Teams in this group have placed a routine in the top 3 at competitions 23 times this season.

Here are the top-scoring routines by these teams based on available info (minimum score = 85.00):

You might have the urge to freak out considering the top half of the list is dominated by Stevenson and Barrington. But those two stellar squads would take up just two of the six qualifying spots. Huntley’s been strong all season with their hip hop, and one of their performances is the highest-scoring non-Barrington/Stevenson routine on this list. Also surging at recent competitions have been Jacobs and South Elgin.

It’s pretty amazing that 29 routines from these teams have scored at least an 85. If that score was the cut-off under a different rules system, that would leave a couple of worthy teams on the outside looking in–a situation as rigorous as IHSA’s “Top 6” standard, but perhaps a little less heart-breaking and more familiar.

Check out the number of routines that scored better than a 90.  7 out of these 9 elite performances belong to Stevenson and Barrington. Almost 45% of these over-85.00 routines was performed by those two teams.

Of the 16 teams in this section, 11 are double-routine teams that have the luxury of picking which dance to bring to DeKalb. 10 of the teams have either a jazz or lyrical in their arsenal.

These 29 performances have an average score of 89.10, which is a score that’s nearly enough to have won at several competitions this year. If anyone’s in doubt about which 3A sectional is the toughest, that stat should settle it. It wouldn’t surprise me if half of the qualifiers who come out of this group end up dancing on Day 2 in Bloomington.

And then there’s this bit of hyperbole I blurted out after Sunday’s action:

After sorting out these scores, maybe it wasn’t too much of an exaggeration, after all!
