Fremd competition 11/23/13: Varsity 3A
Most Chicago-area dance teams kicked off their competition season at Fremd on November 23rd, and the 21 3A teams brought 30 routines. Scores ranged from 94.67 to 63.07 with an average of 78.2. Judges spent more time watching pom routines (13 of them) than the other unofficial categories of hip hop, kick, lyrical, and jazz / open dance. The top 3 routines included 2 lyricals (Stevenson routine 2 and Barrington routine 1) and the only kick in the entire 3A field (Fremd routine 1), and these scores ranged from 94.67 to 89.80. The mode (or the most common score) were those in the 84.50 – 85.49 range.
Even though more teams performed pom than anything else, those 13 routines had an average of 75.54 (about 2.7 behind the overall 3A average). Putting aside kick (that single routine got an 89.8), the next highest-scoring style was lyrical with 82.61. Jazz/open dance earned a 79.11 average, and the 4 hip hop routines averaged a 76.81.
Looking for the team that could surprise you this season? That’s got to be Waubonsie Valley, whose lyrical came in 5th overall with an 87.73. Also impressive was the host school: Fremd came in 3rd and 4th with kick and pom and look very sharp for this time of year.
