Lake Zurich contest: Varsity 3A
For the varsity 3A teams at the LZ contest on December 8th, it was a story of double-routine dominance along with the spotlight belonging to a category other than lyrical and jazz / open dance.
Hip hop made a huge splash with 5 routines averaging an 85.77 versus the overall 3A average of 82.84. Those routines also reminded everyone that no matter how the scores turn out, hip hop is always going to be a crowd-pleaser. 4 of these hip hop dances scored over the 3A average. (Check out our score chart here)
All 3 lyrical routines bested the 3A average, and none finished outside of the top half of the field. Jazz was nearly split equally between scores that came in above or below the 3A average. And the 13 pom routines represented close to half of all performances at LZ, but their average came in at 80.46–including the overall 2nd place routine (Glenbard North, always a force in pom) and a cluster of 8 routines that earned between 76 and 80 points.
The lack of official category winners continues to skew placements and break hearts. 8 teams brought 2 routines each, and of these 16 dances, 9 occupied a spot in the top 10 (Naperville Central gets the credit for the lone single-routine team to crack the top 10 in 7th). When you average both dances by a double-routine team, 5 of the 8 teams earned an average that was over the 3A average. And when you look even closer, most of these 5 had an average of between 4 and 8 points over that 3A average of 82.84. Of the 3 teams whose double-routine average was under 82.84, the deficits were pretty modest (-1.40, -1.45, and -2.84).
