Z-scores are a rough, rough way of attempting to account for the difference in judging panels across all the sectionals. If you’re not familiar with z-scores, here’s a quick explainer. We’ve ranked all the 3A teams according to the z-score they earned at their sectional. The most basic way of looking at a team’s z-score is that it takes into account the range of scores that a certain panel of judges at that sectional gave all the teams, turning it into a curve; the z-score marks where a team is on that curve. In other words, you could look at it as “how awesome or not awesome of an impression did that routine make with this group of judges who looked at that set of teams?” Ooof. Short version: “the impact it made on the judges, taking into account the impact other dances at that sectional made on those same judges.”
