Most of us chilled during the holiday break but the teams behind these 23 routines made sure to balance break with comp prep. Argo’s hosted an annual competition for years and years, going back to the IDTA and TDI days before the arrival of IHSA dance. Their gym is one of the state’s most unique: fans are in an upper bowl looking down on all the action. The novelty is absolutely cool, though the task is the same: perform at a high level, show how your team and routine have grown, and collect feedback with sectionals and conference competitions just around the corner.
A block of 2A JV routines leads off the action on Sunday morning with Argo’s two JV squads, St. Ignatius, Marist, and Reavis (all pom except for St. Ig.). Fans also get an interesting 1A fight. Back Of The Yards danced just a couple weekends ago at Stagg and they’ll be back for more at Argo. Somonauk’s JV was at that same competition, and now their varsity brings their two dances to the Argo floor. Walter Payton and Rich Central have both caught our attention this season, while Bishop McNamara will be coming off of their trip to Villa Grove’s IDTA contest the day before.
The 3A teams include two dances by Bolingbrook: a very good pom routine plus their crowd-pleasing hip hop work. Seriously, though, that B’brook pom routine deserves your attention. They’ll be up against Whitney Young, who have quietly lurked in the 3A convo of teams that might be headed for a good day at sectionals.
And it’s not an Argo comp without a field of fun 2A matchups! St. Ignatius kicks off that part of the schedule with their energetic jazz routine, followed by a Reavis pom routine that’s gotten crisper each time they bring it to comp. Bremen has two dances to offer to the judges, and the same goes for Marist, who are now into their 4th comp of the winter. Fenwick’s had a quiet comp season, and we don’t see Richards at many competitions, so consider those teams as a two-scoop treat for the fans. And if you think Argo’s scintillating pom routine is an absolute spectacle, just wait until you see them perform it on their home floor. The best Argo routine and team in sooooo long, at their home comp? You’ve gotta be in the bleachers for that one!
Argo Community HS. 7329 W. 63rd St., Summit IL 60501
Sunday, January 5th. Starts at 9 and the last routine is set for 11:50
3A, 2A, 1A, JV 2A
I love me some Argo, though the parking game might be easier for advanced players! Basically you’ll want to get to the big parking lot south of the building. Hit up your phone’s map app and go to satellite mode and zoom in. The little streets east and west of the school (74th and 73rd Avenues) will get you there. You can also opt for the bite-sized lot on the east side of the school or the bigger one across the street. Once inside, you’ll see that Coach Palmer and her Sailorettes dance volunteers know how to run a smooth comp because they’ve been doing it every winter for years and years! The comp wraps up around lunch time, so you’re in decent shape to catch that wild card game or stumble on some quality hot dogs or Italian beef nearby.
(Check back during the week of 1/6)
