Batavia hosts the middle of the 3 Chicagoland area IHSA competitions on Saturday. Burlington Central leads the 1A field both on the schedule and in terms of state readiness and experience, and we’ll get to see how they’ve evolved their dances since mid-November’s Wheaton North comp. Tinley Park gets their 3rd chance to impress the judges, and the intriguingly good Guerin dance program launches their season in Batavia’s gym.
Fans get treated to Geneva’s two routines Ā though you don’t want to miss out on the rest of 2A. There’s a much upgraded Streamwood team, fast-rising Romeoville and St. Ignatius, a proven Willowbrook hip hop routine, powerhouse Fenton, and an always reliable Riverside-Brookfield. Batavia gets the spotlight and not just ’cause they’re hosting; they legitimately look stronger versus the past few seasons and this year might be a whole new level for them.
Both St. Charles East and North face off in an interesting 3A group. We’ll get to see how Neuqua Valley does in its first comp since Andrew. Downers Grove South has an opportunity to build off of last weekend’s clear momentum. It’s the season opener for Glenbard North, and we’ll be also be keeping tabs on Naperville Central’s progress under their new coach. No Stevenson varsity–no worries, however, because you’ll get to see their outstanding JV dancers out on the floor for two routines.

Just east of busy busy busy Randall Road, Batavia offers up a cool visual contrast with a legit cornfield to its south and suburban holiday shopping traffic along Randall. Depending on whether you park north or south of the building, you’ll get to more or less gawk at the school’s beautiful recent renovations. Once you pass through the ultra-modern areas, you go through a field house / food / craft fair area before you’re all of a sudden in a historic gym with school banners that go wayyyyy back in time. Side note: you can usually count on good eats here, so plan on that. It’s where I discovered Dimples Donuts a couple years ago. Teams get to sit on the side bleachers, leaving more space for fans. Last year they had a fun photo backdrop for the teams next to the trophy table. As of last December they had the older style wooden bleachers and there’s a chance of the place running a little warm. On the other hand, expect amazing hospitality from the volunteers. I’d like to thank Batavia team mom Karen for always being so kind to us over the past couple seasons, and of course a big shout out goes to Coach Fuqua!
