Central Illinois gets the spotlight for one of IDTA’s three regional comps of the weekend. The Peoria-area Dunlap dance program has enjoyed success in both IHSA and IDTA and once again gets to host a mid-December showdown.
This comp’s schedule has talented teams that are likely to take the trip to both IHSA and IDTA state. Washington has an illustrious record in both organizations and will demo their talents via two routines (lyrical and jazz). They’ll go toe-to-toe with an ascending Dunlap team in AAA Jazz, while the hosts also perform a AAA Pom Dance routine. AAA Pekin danced at Minooka as an IHSA 2A team and did well, taking a 5th out of 10 really good teams. This time Pekin goes up against both Dunlap and Washington in AAA Jazz.
Over in the A division, our friends from Illini West face off against Eureka in both the Jazz and Lyrical/Contemporary categories. Elmwood has a great pom tradition and they’ll battle Pittsfield, who have also excelled at pom over the years. Lincoln’s all alone in AA pom but the Railettes made a big impression on me last year at IDTA state and I’m sure will put in a solid performance. And starting off the whole day is a Production category entry by Eureka, both a throwback style and a visual treat for the fans.
Over the past couple decades, Morrison (out of western Illinois) has stayed true to the kick tradition and they’ll bring their talents to that category on Dunlap’s floor, facing off against Putnam County. Elsewhere on the schedule fans will see a bevy of talented soloists trying to qualify for IDTA state, along with a handful of junior high dance teams.
The judges will be in IHSA mode for eleven dances right after the lunch break. Eureka, Washington, Dunlap, and Lincoln all have two routines and they’re joined by dances from talented Elmwood, Peoria Notre Dame, and Pekin. It’s one of the biggest IHSA fields at an IDTA comp so far this winter, so you can bet that these teams are looking for feedback as they’ll soon run into each other at IHSA sectionals next month. Of those seven, I can easily picture five of them headed to IHSA state a couple weeks before they’ll do it all over again at IDTA state.
