SENECA IDTA / IHSA DANCE COMPETITION PAGE

UPDATES
FRIDAY 12/13/19:

The Illinois Drill Team Association’s comp season continues on Sunday with its second Chicago-area comp in as many weekends. After three soloists compete it’ll be time for Lemont JV to hit the floor in JV pom, followed by pom entries by Gardner-S.W., Peotone, and Coal City. Hononegah JV then brings their pom dance routine in front of the IDTA judges (newbies: “pom” and “pom dance” are distinct categories). Leading you up to the lunch break are flag routines and then lyrical dances by two important junior high teams. Over the past four decades, elite Lake Park and Joliet-area dancers have first competed on the dance teams from Roselle Middle School and Troy Junior High. That chain of excellence continues on Sunday morning at Seneca.

The lyrical continues on with host Seneca followed by Coal City. After lunch is the IHSA category–seven routines judged under the IHSA rubric, some of which you’ll see again elsewhere today under the IDTA rubric. IHSA 1A teams will want to pay attention to how Gardner, Seneca, Streator, Coal City, and Hansberry Prep do in front of IHSA judges at Seneca. Same goes for 2A Maine East and 3A Hononegah. The day wraps up with a block of jazz and hip hop dances back in IDTA mode.

On my visit to Seneca in the summer of 2016 I came across what has to be one of the nicest dance rooms of any high school in Illinois. It matches the team’s upward trajectory this decade, earning accolades in IDTA and making lots of noise in IHSA 1A. Seneca’s dancers have access to top-level training in nearby Morris, so that lets you know this program is well-versed in high school dance team culture and skills.
