Is there a more iconic dance comp than a Sunday afternoon at Stevenson? Years ago this comp came in mid-February, but in the IHSA era it’s mostly been a December battle featuring a cheer comp in the morning. The dance side of things includes quite the 3A field. Niles West brings their new look to the big stage at Stevenson, and district-buddies Niles North (who’ve also looked very noteworthy) will be here too. Fremd had an alright November but then December started looking awesome with their 1-2 finish last weekend at LZ. Ever-graceful South Elgin has usually dance well here, as has a solid Conant team. Downers Grove North sees how it does in a 2-comp weekend scenario. Glenbard North looked great at Batavia and I’m excited to see how their dances look after another week of work. Leyden’s lyrical work usually catches the audience’s eye, so look for the Leydenettes to do it again here at SHS. Expect Jacobs to bring their signature intensity and top-notch choreo to this floor. State-experienced Lyons Township rocked their lyrical dance at IDTA last weekend and also picked up a 2nd in the IHSA division at that comp (Gardner-South Wilmington), and here’s their shot at performing in a completely different setting. West Chicago has a knack for pleasing the crowd and they’ll likely do that again as the first team to start the 3A dances. I’m looking forward to Wheaton-Warrenville South’s always beautiful jazz work. Speaking of that style, Harlem was so impressive at Oak Forest and I’m excited to see them again! And for fans of routines that are fun to watch, you’ll want to see Warren’s hip hop and also the relatively rare appearance by New Trier.
If you don’t think of 1A when you think “Stevenson comp,” you’re missing out. Frequently dangerous IC Catholic takes the floor with their dazzling choreography. Teams hundreds of miles south of here will be dying to know how Morris does, as they’re a favorite to battle for 1A’s crown in February. Northside CP has proven its confidence on the comp floor this winter, while Trinity makes its comp season debut.
After a fierce 2A showdown last weekend at LZ, a very similar lineup heads to Stevenson on Sunday afternoon. Mundelein has some momentum building after a tie for 2nd last Saturday. Libertyville continues their great season but will have to contend with a talented Sycamore team who launched their comp season last Sunday. A great group of teams have a chance to show their growth: Freeport, Grayslake North, Buffalo Grove, Carmel, and Hersey. All are really capable of heading into winter break feeling good about their path into January. Kenwood has had a bright profile all season (especially last Sunday at GBS) and those dancers will surely bring their spark to the SHS floor. Grant pleases the crowd like no other, and are poised to build off of last weekend’s solid debut. All of these 2A teams will have to grapple with defending champs Lake Zurich and an extra tough Deerfield team.

Sunday, December 15. 2A dances begin at 1:45 with awards between 4-4:30. 3A and 1A get the floor starting at 4:30 with the last dance hitting at 7

Stevenson’s got several parking lots, but the most ideal one is to the northwest of the building. That takes you straight to the correct gym. Cheer rules in the morning, so by the start of dance hopefully the crowd and heat have dissipated. One of the most unique gyms in the Chicago suburbs, Stevenson’s bleachers look roomier than they actually are, but there are often lots of open seats on the far end away from the spectator entrance. The place can run warm or even a shade cool, so be ready for that variety. Sidelines are a little tight so be aware of not getting the performance floor dirty. Teams usually take the side bleachers. One of the best lounging / chill-out areas in IHSA competition is just a short walk south of the gym. I’m not making any promises on what’s on the menu, but in the past they’ve had Lou Malnati’s… If not, family and friends can grab a meal by heading east to the Rt 22 / Rt 21 intersection. Coach P’s volunteers do a nice job every year of keeping things running smoothly!
