Six days before sectionals, Grayslake Central hosts the last shot at judge feedback for 32 varsity routines.
Loyola’s gotten good at the quick trip between this comp and their conference comp on the same day, and the Ramblerettes face the same double comp dilemma again tomorrow. Luckily they have a great record of pulling off success at both events. Elsewhere in 3A, you have 2 teams on hot streaks: Huntley (coming off of their home comp win last Sunday) and Naperville North (DVC champs).
Two more teams that have done great on this floor are Waubonsie Valley and Sandburg, The WV dancers have been a tough group all season and they’re poised to soak in the good vibes they seem to have whenever they come to Grayslake Central. Sandburg’s in the same boat: amazing choreo, highly skilled dancers, a challenging season, but a good record of success at this comp.
McHenry’s got a nice roll going after improving their score a bunch between last weekend and their conference comp, and Larkin brings their talents north after dancing at the South Elgin comp on Saturday.
2A stars dot the schedule all morning and midday: Sycamore (2nd and 3rd at Huntley, 2nd at conference), Antioch (NLCC winners), Crystal Lake Central (2nd at FVC), Mundelein (3rd at NSC), Grant (2nd at NLCC), Cary-Grove (3rd in FVC), and Freeport (NIC-10 champs). Libertyville’s had commanding performances for much of the winter, punctuated by a win in 2A lyrical last weekend at Palatine. And you can count on Hinsdale South to make a run at their conference title on Monday.
The two 1A teams are fascinating rebuild stories. From where Johnsburg started the winter, their improvement has been inspirational. And Evergreen Park’s transformation is a great case study for turning around a program in just one season.
Grayslake Central HS. 400 N.Lake St., Grayslake, IL 60030
Sunday, January 19. Dances start at 9:05 with the last one on the floor at 1:05

If you’re headed to the school from Rt. 120 to the south, you’ll be traveling through a residential area for a couple minutes, and then the school suddenly appears on your left. Lots of space is in the big lot along Hillside Avenue, though the spectator entrance is on the southwest corner of the building (a chilly walk). Inside, I’ve experienced searing heat and legit chill, so be ready for anything. On the other hand it’s one of the best places to watch a dance comp in terms of seat comfort. If you’re watching on the north side of the floor, you’ll have to literally walk the long way around the court to get there, so plan accordingly if you’re just getting there a minute before your fave team comes on! If you’re in the mood to hang out, I do remember some comfy lounge chairs in the hall in years past…along with a good and healthy snack selection Coach Ziegler and her team are super nice folks and I bet that extends to all their volunteers!
