Some teams are emerging back into competition after break, and others are fresh off of dancing at Argo or Maine East last weekend. Lockport plays host to an array of south and southwest suburban teams (plus far-traveling Auburn and O’Fallon) on what promises to be the first wintry feeling Saturday of the comp season. Conference comps are days away, so you can bet that these teams are gearing up for an active stretch!
2A and their JV counterparts get the spotlight all to themselves for the morning block at Lockport. Strong routines are set to wrap up the morning action (Hinsdale South, Lincoln-Way West, Argo, Lemont, Willowbrook), but lurking earlier in the session are teams that have plenty of positive momentum. Take Marist, for example, who brought home a 1st place trophy last Sunday. Reavis picked up a 3rd place last Sunday, while TF South earned 2nd in the IHSA category at Maine East’s IDTA contest. And yeah, IDTA is a different rubric, but these 2A teams will want to keep in mind that TF North earned an IDTA state-qualifying score on Sunday–their hip hop routine is a good one. Another team to look our for is Jones CP, who stunned with a 3rd-place run just before Thanksgiving at Libertyville.
1A teams hit the floor in the afternoon led by an entertaining and ascending Back Of The Yards team (2nd place last weekend). Speaking of rising up, how about those Rich Township teams this season? East, Central, and South have all shined on the floor this winter and they’ll likely do that again on Saturday. They’ll have to face Tinley Park who have found success whenever they’ve hit the floor this season.
I love comps where the host school has some proving to do. Lockport’s flashed their stellar choreography at every competition since Andrew, but this time they’ll have their home floor and fans to power them through those challenging two minutes. Sort of in the same boat (but away from home, obviously) are Stagg (hip hop) and Sandburg (lyrical)–both excellent routines. Then there are those teams that are dancing well this season: Joliet Central, Bradley-Bourbonnais, and Lyons Township. The most potent team in this field is Lincoln-Way Central, though you can’t count out a very good Plainfield South team. I hope fans give a warm welcome to O’Fallon after their 261 mile trip from the St. Louis suburbs! They earned a 6th (out of 19 teams) in the IHSA category last weekend at Belleville East, a 1st place in lyrical, and a 2nd for pom dance.
Lockport Twp HS EAST CAMPUS. 1333 E. 7th St., Lockport, IL 60441
Saturday, January 11. 2A routines go from 9:00 through their awards at 12:30. 1A and 3A dance from 1:00 with their awards set for around 4:30
3A, 2A, 1A, JV 3A, JV 2A
It’s at the EAST campus!!! It’s basically the southwest corner of 7th Street and Farrell Road. The biggest parking lots are east of the school along Farrell, but way, way, way closer to the gym are the 2 lots on the northwest side of the building along Seventh. Don’t do what I did years ago and confuse Seventh Street with Illinois Route 7, which is less than a mile north of 7th St, and (yikes!) eventually crosses 7th Street at a diagonal. The gym’s cozy but you’ll enjoy the big commons area just outside of it!
(Check back during the week of 1/13)
