Ready to bust a myth? Mahomet-Seymour is. They’re hosting their annual January comp, and even though they’re a team from outside of the Chicago area, it’s NOT an IDTA event! This comp is all about that IHSA rubric, and so you’ll see a couple teams endure lengthy road trips to face other teams they might run into at IHSA’s sectionals or state.
It’s mostly a 1A party, but we should take a moment and recognize Alton as the only 3A team on the schedule, along with their 167 mile drive to Mahomet. We’re fans of the program after meeting them a few seasons ago!
OK, on to 1A. Hosts Mahomet-Seymour get tons of props from us here at 8CA for coming up north to the Chicago area to dance at IHSA comps several times this season (Minooka, Andrew, and Mundelein). This time they get to perform their two routines on their home floor, but they’ll have to face some stiff competition from 1A stars Clinton and Aurora Central Catholic. ACC’s lyrical gets the asterisk, but you can’t ignore their hip hop routine which has shown it’s capable of winning! Centralia’s been busy lately (a win in hip hop and a 2nd in the IDTA category behind Highland at last weekend’s Belleville East comp), and they’ll put their hip hop and pom skills to the test against these formidable opponents. Look out for pom specialists Elmwood (coming off a state-qualifying performance in IDTA last Saturday) and Fieldcrest (last competed at Waubonsie Valley).
Quick round of applause for Macomb. We don’t get to see them often on the dance scene, and they’ll travel 140 miles to get to the action at Mahomet-Seymour. Kewanee has a long, 100+ mile trek, too. An interesting story is Unity, a program that has IHSA state experience and can definitely shake things up at this comp. It’s a resurgent year for the Rich Township dance teams, so expect Rich Central to make a statement with their hip hop after competing last Sunday at Argo.
